Analyze This

After reading Six Degrees I've began to analyze the things I do and say which make me appear to be someone I'm not. Very often people do and say things which completely disagree's with their inner character. What if Britney's wild and erratic behavior is just away to hide the love and support she is longing for? Why do people choose to fit the "status quo" instead of being their own? Does the media really encourage you to become someone you are opposite of?

Train

Well I was in the train on my way to school, and I see five asian boys doing math homework and then I look across from the asian boys just to see two young African American girls reading some books. The media does have a strong effect on some but not all.

SIX DEGREES

How would we know when we have a match of Six people? Would we have to go out and aggresively look for them or would they just show themselves in a "small world" situation?

The Boondocks

I am a big fan of the Boondocks and how they tackle and show different backgrounds on tv. In this show they accurately try to express what alot of black peoples stereotypes on certain issues. The only thing i noticed was that they use the "N" word alot. Why do you think they use the "N" word alot?Is it to make us laugh? I kow that I laugh sometimes.

Will this ever end

http://cbs4.com/video/?id=42598@wfor.dayport.com

Still today even though there have been cases with priest having unwanted advances with children in church it is still evident that this is still happening. As shown in the above web link, this is still happening in churches and it even seems that church officials are letting priest get away with this crime and they are allowing them to continue preaching. What will it take before this crime is taken seriously and teens are more protected?

Media vs. Teens

I was browsing the internet, looking for articles related to teens in media and I came across a very interesting article. This article dates back to the Columbine shootings, but it's relevance still holds true. Why is it that now, so many years later, the media is still following the same twisted protocol? Will this always be the way teens are portrayed in the media?
Please follow the link and read the article. It's seriously interesting.

HiP hOP VS. AmeRICa

Constantly they argue over the aspects of hip hop. How do you think that this will ever get anywhere or ever solve this controversial discussion???

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

I cound't find the commercial that they give on MTV about the sigarret company, when its compared to gund they are just as deadly when rated light and ultra light. They are still highly addicted and could still cause death by cancer. So why do people keep using it? Becuase its used in the media and because artis and rappers use it?

What the want people to think about us

Lately i have noticed that television makes it seem as though African American and Latino ethnic groups are the only groups who's teenage age girls have babies at a young age as though we do nothing but stand on street corners and push baby carriages. Television also makes it seem as though whites do everything right and don't make mistakes or even have babies young. My question is.....Why do you think do you think television wants to portray us to be this way?

Celebrities And How Their Crimes Are Important

I noticed lately that some celebrities have been running into the law for various reasons. Foxy Brown has been a frequent celeb that has appeared too much times on the news and in the daily news. How is Foxy Brown assualting a nail sylist with her blackberry going to keep me imformed about the bigger issues in the media. I watch the news alot and having the media class and classes with Mr. Scialo I see various topics and try to figure out why and for what are they showing it. My question is Why do you think these unimportant issues are being stressed to the viewers? Is it because were eating this publicity or is it really a must to know?

Victim v. Criminal

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/ny-nyshot215426238oct21,0,2043252.story

In the article above discusses numerous shootings, including those of four teenagers...
Throughout the city, teenagers are always included in reports of "gang related" shootings. What about those in the suburbs? Why is it that those are rarely ever linked to gangs? Could we say that every young teend in the city is involved with a gang? I don't think so. Do you think the news is portraying our young victims as criminals for a reason? Or is every incident involving teens, that makes it to the news, is really linked to gang activity? I have some doubts...

Teens and Their Teachers

http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-us&tab=m138&vid=cddbe8ac-eb0c-43ac-9cfb-c4458c29ec20&playlist=videoByTag:mk:us:sd:1:sf:Title:ns:VC_Supplier:tag:Msnbc:vs:0&gt1=10450

In the above web post their is an interesting article about teens and high school students. It seems that high school teachers getting involved with their students is becoming more common and that most cases are "never reported". In some cases that are reported the teacher doesn't even get punished. It may be thought that it mostly happens with male students and female teachers but it was found that 90% of these cases involve male teachers and female students. Not only is this a growing problem but if the teacher is fired or quits the school district they could always go to another school district where they could do something like that again. There is no system that documents these problems. These teachers are even sent to elementary schools in the hope that they don't do it again. It was even said that principles should get more training to see these actiions in their co-workers but its not like you can just tell what the person does just by the way they behave. What do you think about this issue, and whats the best way for it to be solved?

What is it???

What defines your idendity, is it your appearance to other or the action that you take? Can they be the things that go unnoticed or a mixture of all three?

Rehabs IDENTITY!!!

Seems like La Lohan is out of REHAB...Dun Dun Dun, who is she now. Has she found Christ, going to help the soldiers in Iraq or building a school for famished 3rd world children. Can we really predict what two more Teen Vogue parties can do for the Lohanater???

It has No Effect on Me

When asked, most kids claim the media has no efect in shaping them. Do you beleive that you can be raised as an inner city student unifluenced by the media? Is such a thing possible? You may see it and choose to ignore it but doesn't the media effect who you are? Even if it's just you siding with Coca Colar over Sprite or vice versa b/c you don't like one commercial. Doesn't media have to have some effect on who you become?

Diabetic Teens Skipping Insulin to Lose Weight

Diabulimia is usually practiced by teenage girls and young women, and it may be growing more common as the secret is exchanged on Internet bulletin boards for diabetics and those with eating disorders. One expert who has studied the phenomenon estimates that 450,000 Type 1 diabetic women in the United States — one-third of the total — have skipped or shortchanged their insulin to lose weight and are risking a coma and an early death.
"People who do this behavior wind up with severe diabetic complications much earlier," said Ann Goebel-Fabbri, a clinical psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.
The American Diabetes Association has long known about insulin omission as a way to lose weight. But "diabulimia" is a term that has only cropped up in recent years and is not a recognized medical condition, said Barbara Anderson, a pediatrics professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Type 1 diabetes is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with this disease produce little or no insulin, so they take shots of the hormone daily.
It differs from Type 2, the form associated with obesity and which accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes.
Insulin is vital for delivering glucose from the bloodstream to the body's cells. Without insulin, cells starve even while the bloodstream becomes burdened with too much glucose.
When Type 1 diabetics skip or reduce their insulin, they risk falling into a coma or even dying. Blindness, amputations and kidney failure are some of the possible long-term complications.
Warning signs for diabulimia include a change in eating habits — typically someone who eats more but still loses weight — low energy and high blood-sugar levels, Goebel-Fabbri said. Frequent urination is another signal. When sugars are high, the kidneys work overtime to filter the excess glucose from the blood.
This purging of sugar from the body through the kidneys is similar to someone with bulimia, who binges and then purges, or vomits, Anderson said.
Studies show that women with Type 1 diabetes are twice as likely to develop an eating disorder. Ironically, good diabetes management, which requires a preoccupation with food, counting carbohydrates and following a diet, may lead some to form an unhealthy association with food, Goebel-Fabbri said.
Jacq Allan, 26, is a diabulimic. She said she had not taken her insulin shots for two weeks and rarely takes them regularly. She weighs 42 pounds (19 kilograms) less than she did a year ago.
Allan is stuck between two fears: taking insulin, which may lead to weight gain, and the damage her destructive compulsion is doing to her body.
"I'm terrified of insulin," Allan said. "Every morning I wake up and think maybe I should go to the hospital."
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes nearly three years ago, Allan said she can feel the constant, sky-high sugar in her blood. Her list of ailments — chest pain, heart palpitations, muscle cramps, bacterial infections and lower back pain — are not the usual health problems of a twenty-something.
"I'm constantly worried that my eyes are going to go, but they seem relatively OK for the moment," she said. "I always wonder if this will be the day that some major organ fails. I kind of want something to happen because then maybe I'll stop."

Cackling Clinton, Hooting Hillary: Is that all the media can dig up?

Notice how the media chooses one thing to focus on and then finds clips to support it, regardless of how asinine or silly...Think of the endless messages you could send by cutting various soundbites/images and putting them together in some sort of montage...

Human mind and entertainment, How does music affect our level of understanding, confedence and so on?

To my opinion it has most affect on our level of confedence, according to music videos if a chick has a nice butt she is perfect for ALL guys (according to videos) so if a girl does not have a nice butt or a nice body she will never find anything. Now how does this affect kids? Well I don't know how about a look at our old cartoons now having guns in the internet.

Endangered: The American Reader

According to an article on CNN money.com entitled Endangered: The American Reader, 47% of adults currently read fiction. This figure ten years ago was 79%. What does this say about our society today? If our adults can't even read for pleasure, are the children doing it?

Intolerance Displayed Today

What to u saw when you see people of the Jewish religion entering a NYC public bus. Most people may saw they wouldn't have a problem with that. Then why is it that i witnessed African American Jr. High School students approach a Jewish family on the bus and proceed to ask them why they were there and if their bus wasn't working today. I understand that non-Jewish people are not allowed on the buses owned by the Jewish people but is this still a way for us to b acting? I certainly don't think so. After all the fighting for equality i was shocked to see what was going on before my very eyes. Is this how all African American students want to be portrayed?

The Wire--Portrayals of Education in the Media

I am curious as to how you have read how "The Wire" portrays inner city education...here is a clip just outlining its potential goals. It is one of the first programs to attempt to truly document how students negotiate between home, the streets, and school.

Eating Disorders - Therapy for Anorexia and Bulimia

Mike Hussey of the American Chronicle
September 28, 2007
Many of those suffering from anorexia and bulimia are high-functioning adults coping with stress, anxiety, and depression. They may have tried many different solutions to their problem. This article explores the typical experiences of a few people suffering from such eating disorders. Most therapists today deal with these disorders by first treating the underlying causes of the body-image problems. These causes are assumed to be past experiences and how they may have affected us.
Women and men who suffer from these illnesses may have to overcome deeper issues ranging from poor self-esteem to childhood abuse. Effective therapy can help improve their professional and family lives as well.
Therapy for anorexia and bulimia
Anorexia, bulimia, and eating disorders are a way of coping when stress and anxiety seem unbearable.
With the encouragement of a therapist, an anorexic or bulimic client can learn to face the sources of her stress or anxiety, and find healthier means of reacting to stressful situations.
One woman who had overcome eating disorders several years earlier consulted a psychotherapist in Austin when her problems recurred. This woman had recently moved into Austin, and she was without the support of family and friends while working at a new job. She had reverted to her old methods of coping with stress, namely food. Food is a form of self-treatment for many people, as it was in this woman's case.
Her therapist helped her to see her need for developing new relationships, and she also participated in group therapy to meet people.
By the end of therapy, she made new friends and was excelling in her new job. Her eating disorder no longer affected her.
Eating disorders and treating depression
Depression can be another cause of eating disorders too. Of course, eating disorders can cause someone to be depressed, so determining cause from effect is difficult.
A depressed person may overeat, or not eat enough, and so either gain or lose a lot of weight. This will affect their physical health. A therapist will help her concentrate on her strengths and regain her sense of balance.
One woman in Houston was depressed because her husband had had an affair and left her. She blamed herself and her recent weight gain for this, but was not able to lose weight. She tried everything she could but the weight remained. Therapy helped her see several other contributors to her depression. She explored some of the events in her past that were causing her a great deal of distress.
She was able to take responsibility for her eating habits, and find a warm and supportive relationship.
Eating disorders, PTSD and victims of sexual abuse
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder may happen because of one-time traumas likes being the victim of an accident or a crime, and also because of long-term abuse like childhood sexual or physical abuse.
PTSD often goes hand in hand with eating disorders.
Victims of childhood abuse sometimes keep the abuse secret, and the therapist may be the first person they confide in. Sometimes when childhood abuse has been blocked out, a reaction may be triggered in adult life by seemingly unrelated events. And lots of times, bulemia or overeating is a symptom. One therapist in Denver helped her client work her way through traumatic memories by giving her art and journaling exercises. These gave the victim a sense of perspective and she was able to stop blaming herself. She also became better connected with others emotionally. Her eating disorder markedly improved.
Eating disorders and counseling for couples
Eating disorders may affect someone who is married or in a committed relationship.
Counseling can benefit married, engaged, or lesbian and gay couples, if one has an eating disorder. The partner with the eating disorder may feel guilty for what he thinks he is causing his partner to feel. And the partner may feel guilty for feelings of resentment towards the partner with the disorder.
That is why couples therapy helps so much.
The most common problems that bring partners into therapy are poor communication, or upheavals like illness, death of a family member, or an affair. Any of these can plunge partners into depression and conflict and often make the eating disorder worse.

Fights Off Of School Grounds

Fights off of school grounds

In middle and high schools across the country teachers and school officials are struggling with ways to help their students. They are responsible for educating their students, but also for keeping them out of trouble. The number of physical and verbal fights that occur in schools are on the rise and many school officials are trying to get a hold on the growing problem.
In many larger cities it is likely that at least one physical or verbal fight will break out daily in a school or on school property. There are a number of reasons why a fight may breakout at a school. These reasons may include, but are not limited to, a sports team, friends, grades, relationships, or drugs.
Although a verbal fight is not as damaging as a physical fight it can still cause an unlimited amount of damage to a teenager or young adult. There are many instances where verbal fights are not even being considered fights. This is due to that fact that no one is being physically injured and they are now happening so much that they sometimes go unnoticed.
A few years back a typical school fight would involve fists, punching, and maybe some hair pulling. Unfortunately now many violent students have a large number of dangerous weapons all within their reach. It is not uncommon to hear of a school fight that involves a knife or a gun.
School officials in areas throughout the country are faced with the difficult task of trying to prevent fights from breaking out on their grounds. Large populated schools are often equipped with security guards and metal detectors. Although this protection may not completely eliminate school fights there are many school officials that are noticing a decrease in dangerous school fights where extra security guards and metal detectors are in place.
Smaller school with a smaller budget may be unable to fully staff their school with potentially expensive security measures. For this reason many smaller schools rely on their teachers and students to be aware of their surroundings. Many students are encouraged to inform an adult if they learn of an impending argument or fight.
In a world that is filled with peer pressure many students may be afraid to alert school officials or adults to a potential fight. For this reason many schools are effectively developing anonymous ways for students or other community members to report any existing or potential acts of violence.
Another way that schools are trying to control the number of fights that occur during school hours or on their property is by punishing students why many be involved or have previously participated in a verbal or physical fight. Many students are now being expelled or suspended from school. A lighter punishment may involve after-school or lunchtime detention.
Many parents and school officials are aware that if a teenager wishes to harm another individual or student they will likely try, whether it be on school grounds or not. School officials are in charge of keeping a large number of students safe and free from danger. Although most school officials would hate to see a fight occur off of school grounds their main responsibility is protecting students while they are in their care.

Are you 4real???

Walking in lower Manhattan today there was a magazine cover that caught my eye. It was an In-Touch Magazine with front page headline screaming "Is She Pregnant, Angelina Gains 10lbs". Come on lets be serious with all the things that are going on in the world they decided to tell the country that Angelina Jolie has gained 10 f******n pounds. Are the publishers trying to tell me the Ms. Jolie gaining 10lbs is more important than a solider taking a bullet for this nation or that her weight gain is more important than the unfair justice that is being handed out in Jena?? To the right is copy of the cover.

Teenagers

The lyrics to this song offended me because of the way teens are protayed. What do you think? How do you feel about the lyrics? Do you think it's true? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VjbPz4vLgs
