Homophobia

Why is it that Rap and R&B bash Gays in their music? Do you think they are taking a stand by saying gays arent an orientation or is it just a hateful sign?

So...what are we going to do about it?

Some of you have expressed disdain at the way inner city students are portrayed on the news, in movies, and on TV shows whether that be due to violence, academics, relationships, drugs, etc. So...my question is....what are we going to do about it? You are the pilot group. What can we do to address the side that is silenced, unspoken, not addressed? How can we show the reality of students who are proactive and care about their education? Now's the time to brainstorm...

City love...

Ever notice how most movies about inner city students almost always have on character that's just moving from the suburbs into the city? In Save the Last Dance, Julia Stiles' character was moving from ther upper crust life in Jersey to the city. In Step Up a similar scenario. As the movie list continues there is the same plot and scenario. Young suburban kid moves into city,. awkward at first, meets one friend, develops into small group of freinds, falls for someone with a high status at school or who will draw attention them. But is this what really happens? Have you ever seen this couple walking through the hallways? I haven't..so why don't they show the inner city girl who falls in love with the city boy?
where is that at???

A whole Nude World

I dont really think that theres a real answer for why Inner City students a portrayed as young mischeavous children with absolutely no future and no morals. Instead of going on about why they show us fighting on T.V. etc... Follow the link below and listen carefully to the words of this "A whole new World" parody. I am not sure as to the creator but backtrack to the sexual appetite of our youth today and make note of how a timeless tragedy can be turned into such vulgar comedy.

Something I saw on the CW 1 news last night

I was watching the news last night when I heard a report about a certain advertisiment that caught the eyes of a lot of people in the area (I hope you all know whaT I'M TALKING ABOUT IF YOU SAW THE NEWS TOO). It was an ad showing a woman striking a very "out there" pose. The makers of the ad are people who use sexuality to market things but the name of the company wasn't given out. When people were asked what they thought about the ad, some women replied "it's a little too tacky" while a male replied "it's interesting". My question to you is that do you think using sexuality is going out of style or was it set up in the wrong area or wrong target audience?

What is the role of the news?

As we begin our discussions about how various news stations broadcast news or cover stories, I wonder what you think of as appropriate. Check out how Fox News berates Chris Crocker for his response to Britney Spears and her "comeback." Is this high-quality journalism when youtube clips are making national news?

Targeted Lyrics

Did you know that Young Joc and Coldplay are both under the same record label?
If you didn't at least you do now, but that's not the point. The point is that these two artists are produced and distributed by the same company and yet their lyrics are set out to be something completely different. In many of Youn Joc's songs he talks about degrading women and having money, but in Coldplay's songs the message is uplifting. Why? Joc is marketed to young African-Americans and Coldplay to young white teens, but why is that the message sent to us is a negative one and the other half gets one of hope? This ties back into actually listening to the music you enjoy.
Go listen to Joc's song "I know you see it", but read the lyrics.
And do the same for Coldplay's "Square One"
Then post thoughts.....it's really interesting.

Just thinking...

I was shocked and appalled at the candidate for Ms. South Carolina.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WALIARHHLII

Just to keep you informed of the numbers, this video has over 3.5 million views on UTube. It has generated more views in 3 days than all of the videos of any presidential candidate in months. Interesting that she has now received more press than even the winner of the pageant.

What does this aspect of the media tell you? Is beauty more important than brains? Thoughts please!!
