Study sheds new light on women with anorexia

Monday, December 24, 2007
By Mark Roth, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Even after they have stopped starving themselves, women with anorexia seem to have trouble enjoying their food and experiencing other pleasures.
That's the thrust of two studies done this year by the University of Pittsburgh's Dr. Walter Kaye and Dr. Angela Wagner of J.W. Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany.
The first study, published in March in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, showed that pleasure centers in the brains of women recovering from anorexia didn't respond nearly as strongly to sips of sugar water as the brains of healthy women did.
The second study, which appeared this month in the American Journal of Psychiatry, showed that 13 women recovering from anorexia had much different patterns of brain activation while playing a betting game than 13 healthy women did.
Both studies used functional magnetic resonance imaging, which measures blood flow to parts of the brain while it is performing different tasks.
In the sugar-water study, the brains of women recovering from anorexia showed much lower responses to the sweet liquid than those of healthy women, particularly in the insula, a prune-sized part of the brain associated with social emotions.
That suggests that in women with anorexia, "they don't need to eat because it doesn't reward them," Dr. Wagner said.
In the new study, two groups of women were asked to guess whether a virtual playing card would show a number greater or less than 5. If they guessed correctly, they won $2. If they were wrong, they lost $1. And if they didn't guess in the allotted time, they lost 50 cents.
The outcomes of the game weren't the important part. What mattered was the way different parts of their brains reacted to the challenge.
In the healthy women, an area known as the anterior ventral striatum, associated with emotional rewards, showed much more activity than in the women recovering from anorexia.
But the former anorexics had stronger responses in a brain region known as the caudate, which is associated with planning and calculating future consequences.
That could mean that "the most anxious individuals with anorexia ... may respond in an overly 'cognitive' manner to both negative and positive stimuli and consequently may not be able to process information about rewarding outcomes of action," the study concluded. "Thus, performance -- that is, being right or wrong -- may become more important than [pleasure] rewards."
That fits with the well-known tendency of women with anorexia to try to please others, control the outcome of events and pay great attention to detail, Dr. Kaye said.
A healthy person "has to have a balance between the here and now and future consequences," said Dr. Kaye, an internationally known anorexia researcher. "Some people may be biased toward the here and now and never look at future consequences, but anorexics tend to be biased toward worrying about consequences."
Researchers wanted to study anorexic women who had regained their weight because they didn't want the dietary effects of the disorder to affect the brain imaging, he said.
The studies don't necessarily mean that anorexic women who are recovering will start avoiding food again.
"Our data suggests that once people recover, they rarely relapse, but they will struggle with these other traits for the rest of their lives."
Anorexia affects about 0.5 percent of all women in the United States, and bulimia -- in which women binge and purge -- affects another 1 to 2 percent of women. About half of anorexic and bulimic women will recover, but among the other half, 10 percent will die over a 20-year period, making it the deadliest of all psychiatric conditions.
Dr. Kaye believes 50 to 80 percent of these conditions may be caused by genetic factors, and said that girls who go on to get the eating disorders show signs at age 8 or 9 of such behaviors as being highly anxious or obsessive about details.
The studies suggest it may not be enough to get women to stop starving themselves, Dr. Wagner said.
"In the past," she said, "we have focused on getting them to eat, but we might now want to work on changing their mindsets" as well, through therapy or medication or both.

Confronting The World

Just bringing up a question that came up during Jasmine's presentation. Why is it that you don't say anything to those that are stereotyping you? What is holding you back?

Brian's Post

Sorry about the other post. I wanted to get feedback about my recent facilitation. How good was my verbal communication, the discussion questions/topics, were they qliche or good questions, etc. If you don't remember my facilitation was about clothing styles of teenagers. So far I have seen a lot of questions asked from each group and I like the in depth responses.

Facillitation

I've changed my topic and don't want anyone to know.

Fat v. Skinny

Sure it may not be deep thought BUT we always focus on how fat people are portrayed in the media; jovial, funny beyond comparison, proud etc. but we never ask ourselves what those who we've deemed slim or skinny feel. They are represented in the media too but always as an object of sexual desire or eye candy. How do skinny people fel?

:D

Racism in the media

Yeah sure you might say it's played out or easy to find but I like this topic because it's something you wouldn't expect to see now. Yeah maybe 10 or 15 years ago it was blatant but now with times changing doesn't it seem as if at least the television shows we watch or the magazines we read have become more open and accpeting of various races....we'll see when I facilitate!!

The Facilitations

So far the facilitations that i've seen were great. I like the way that each group went about their lessons. I liked the conversation during the lesson and the work was interesting. I hope my facilitation will go as well as the others and hope to make it fun for all.

Number One Reason For Developing An Eating Disorder

by Joanna Poppink, M.F.T. Hundreds of people have asked me why people develop eating disorders. Of course, there are many issues involved, but as I explore this field, over the years I have concluded that there is one outstanding theme that runs through every person with an eating disorder I have encountered.
Early in their lives they experienced, on a sustained basis, relentless boundary invasion on every level.
When a person's physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, sexual, and creative boundaries are consistently ignored and penetrated that person experiences total boundary invasion. When that person has no control or way to stop, protest or often even acknowledge such invasions, the person experiences helplessness, despair and a certainty that they are worthless to themselves or anyone else.
The consequences of such total invasion are vast. One consequence is an eating disorder.
Having had so many boundaries disregarded, the person has no knowledge or skills in recognizing or honoring boundaries herself. She will eat or starve for emotional relief. She may eat vast amounts of food for comfort value alone. She may deprive herself of food until her life is in danger. She has no internal limit setter that tells her when she has experienced enough. Being oblivious to any boundary means being oblivious to limits of any kind.
The compulsive overeater eats whenever and whatever she likes. Her choices are based on self-medication issues, not feelings of physical hunger.
The anorexic will not eat. There is no limit to her not eating. She will starve herself to death in search of relief from her emotional pain. She knows nothing of the experience enough. She couldn't say, "Enough," to an invader of her boundaries, and she can't say to it herself. The concept of enough has no meaning to her. She often feels that, if she "disappeared" she might find some permanent relief. I have heard countless anorexic young women talk ethereally, with a lost in a beautiful world of angels smile, of how wonderful it would be to be vapor or a light dancing spirit in the clouds.
Ah, such spiritual bliss, they imagine. In reality, it's the final self-protective act, to destroy their bodies and their lives completely. Then they can truly escape the complexities of being alive.
The bulimic will binge grotesque amounts of food. She will literally assault herself with more food than a body can tolerate. She has no limit at all. The compulsive overeater will, at last, have to stop eating if only because of the pain of her distended stomach. Her body sets a final limit. The bulimic has no such limit. She experiences (in her mind) no consequences for the assault of food. When her body cannot bear more, she will vomit it all out. Then she will continue her binge. She may reach her body's limits many times. Each time she does she can throw up and continue.
Eventually she may stop because she is completely exhausted, or she is in danger of being discovered. "Enough" has no meaning to her. There are no limits and no consequences for disregarding her boundaries.
Realistically, of course, there are plenty of consequences. There is tremendous damage happening to the body. And each time people with an eating disorder assault themselves they destroy more of their spirit, soul, self-esteem, sanity, health and value to themselves and others. Each violation deepens their ritualistic behavior, and they become more entrenched in their disorder. The consequence of this is increasing anguish and despair.
So what do I mean by a history of boundary violations? Blatant and extreme boundary violations involve sexual molestation, sexual abuse and physical abuse. Much has been written about these areas now, especially in material exploring Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Use your search engines to find some quality information posted on the internet in these subject areas.
There are other kinds of boundary violations, less dramatic, less discussed and more prevalent which are also devastating to a person's psyche. When, in the name of caretaking, people in authority take over a young person's life, it constitutes boundary invasion. When she has no privacy, when her diary is read, when her things are borrowed or taken without permission, when her efforts in school or sport are overwhelmed by someone else's ideas, goals or personality, when her choices are disregarded or treated with disdain, when she has little or no choice where her personal life, clothes, foods, friends, activities are concerned, her boundaries are being invaded.
Her boundaries are also invaded when, in the name of caretaking, she has no responsibilities of her own and no consequences for her actions. When "the little princess" or the "little prince" can have anything she asks for without putting forth any effort to earn such gifts, she learns nothing about personal effort, limits, consequences or what "enough" means. If she wants something, she gets it. That's all. If someone picks up her clothes, does her laundry, fixes her car, pays her bills, lets her "borrow" money or things and never asks for them back, she experiences no boundaries and no limits.
If she doesn't have to keep her promises, if she doesn't reciprocate with caring activities for people who care for her, she learns nothing useful about herself in relationship to other people. She certainly learns that there are no limits to her behavior or desires.
She doesn't learn that she has meaning and value. She doesn't learn that she can put that meaning and value within her to work to accomplish goals. For example, if she breaks something, whether it is a lamp or a car, her word or someone's heart, it can be up to her to make necessary repairs using her own resources and her own creativity. In such a process she would learn what effort means. She would learn what responsibility and consequences for actions mean. She would learn reasonable limits and reasonable expectations.
Without such learning all she learns are the tricks involved in being cute and manipulative to get what she wants. These are poor and insubstantial tools to rely on when building an adult life.
Somewhere inside, over time, she may gradually realize this. But, having no sense of boundaries, she will only become bewildered and anxious. She will use her eating disorder as a way to numb her feelings of anxiety. She will use her manipulating skills to get what she wants from whomever she can use.
As time goes by there will be less people who will allow themselves to be manipulated. The quality of her circle of associates will decline. She will find herself in bad company. This becomes all the more reason for her to rely on food for comfort. The people around her are less reliable all the time. And finally, they tolerate her presence only because they can manipulate her.
Then she is truly in a total victim position. Her manipulative skills backfire. There are people in this world who are better at manipulating and using than she. She has found them. She has become their target and then their prey. Reliable food or food rituals, including starvation, become her most valuable relationship.
Early in her development she learned through massive boundary invasions (which perhaps seemed so ordinary and unimportant at the time) that she was helpless to assert herself. She learned that she had no private or sacred space to cherish and respect. She also could not acknowledge -- often even to herself -- that she was being thwarted, invaded, controlled, manipulated and forced to deny large aspects of her natural self. She had no recourse except to comply. She complied and developed an eating disorder.
Now that she's older and her manipulation skills are failing her, she only has her eating disorder to rely on. This may be the most crucial time in this person's life. If her pain and despair are terrible enough and she is certain she can not bear this way of living anymore she still has choices. One is to continue down the road of self-destruction. The other is to reach out and get help.
It's a very tough position for her. She would have to recognize that she has had enough. She's never known what enough was. She would have to recognize that she can't bear any more pain. She's never known what a limit was. She'd have to be honest and reach out for genuine help. She has only known about manipulating others.
She's got to feel a lot of anguish and pain before she stretches beyond her life pattern into what might be a real healing and recovery path for herself. She's reaching for something she can't even imagine. No wonder it's so difficult for a person with an eating disorder to decide to get help and allow themselves to begin to trust someone with knowledge of their real personhood. She doesn't know that people exist who do respect and honor boundaries. She doesn't know that there are people who can and will honor and cherish her most private and sacred inner spaces. She doesn't know yet, that someday that trustworthy, respectful, steadfast and competent caretaker she needs so badly can be herself.

A Hairy Tale...

Top Thanksgiving News on CNN.com. Very appetizing!

It may not be the most appetizing reading before a hearty holiday meal, but the New England Journal of Medicine is devoting part of its Thanksgiving issue to a giant hairball -- and not the feline kind.

Doctors say this hairball removed from a woman's stomach weighed 10 pounds.

The prestigious journal details the case of a previously healthy 18-year-old woman who consulted a team of gastrointestinal specialists.

She complained of a five-month history of pain and swelling in her abdomen, vomiting after eating and a 40-pound weight loss.

After a scan of the woman's abdomen showed a large mass, doctors lowered a scope through her esophagus.

It revealed "a large bezoar occluding nearly the entire stomach," wrote Drs. Ronald M. Levy and Srinadh Komanduri, gastroenterologists at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

For the uninitiated, a bezoar is a ball of swallowed foreign material.

"On questioning, the patient stated that she had had a habit of eating her hair for many years -- a condition called trichophagia," they wrote.

"It seemed like she'd been doing this for several years," Levy told CNN.

The woman underwent surgery to remove the mass of black, curly hair, which weighed 10 pounds and measured 15 inches by 7 inches by 7 inches, the doctors said.

Five days later, she was eating normally and was sent home.

A year later, the pain and vomiting were gone, the patient had regained 20 pounds "and reports that she has stopped eating her hair."

Reached at his home in Chicago, Levy said he had no idea whether the journal's timing of the publication on Thanksgiving was intentional.

Either way, he said, it would not affect the gastroenterologists' holiday dinner plans -- "We don't get fazed by much."

Concerns over Teddy Bear Teacher

**Very frightening to see what innocent acts can be viewed as a crime. Thoughts?**

KHARTOUM, Sudan (CNN) --
Britain's foreign secretary said he was "very concerned" about the case of a UK teacher who was in court Thursday, facing charges of offending religion by allowing a teddy bear to be named "Mohammed."

The closed hearing for Gillian Gibbons, 54, in central Khartoum could last until 10 p.m. (2 p.m. ET), defense counsel told CNN. A staff member from the British Embassy in Khartoum and defense lawyers are in the hearing with her.

The courthouse was heavily guarded by police, who kept journalists -- and, for a while, even her defense lawyer -- away.

The purpose of the hearing is to decide whether there is enough of a case to proceed.

Gibbons was detained earlier this week when she asked her class of 7-year-olds to name the toy as part of a school project, Robert Boulos, the head of Unity High School, told CNN.Video Watch latest developments in the case. »

She was ushered into the courthouse in central Khartoum through a crowd of reporters by Sudanese police earlier in the day. She looked somber and dazed and was dressed in a black blazer and light blue skirt.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband called Gibbons' actions an "innocent misunderstanding," following a meeting with the Sudanese Ambassador to Britain, Omer Siddig, who was summoned to the Foreign Office in London.

"I explained to him that we were very concerned by the case. We believe that this was an innocent misunderstanding," he said in a statement released after the meeting.

"The Sudanese ambassador undertook to ensure our concerns were relayed to Khartoum at the highest level. He also said he would reflect back to Khartoum the real respect for the Islamic religion in this country," the statement added.

Boulos told CNN Wednesday that the complaint about Gibbons' actions came from a staff member at the school, not from a parent as originally thought.

Speaking outside the court, Boulos said a letter from Sudan's Ministry of Education claimed that parents had raised concerns over the naming of the bear. He said he did not know who was responsible, but was "horrified" when he found out it was a member of his own staff.

Defense counsel later confirmed that the complaint came from Sarah Khawad, a secretary at the school. The counsel, who did not give his name, said the hearing had been delayed as it waited for Khawad to arrive at court to give her evidence.

British consular staff and Gibbons' defense team were at first refused access to the court by Sudanese police.

The defense lawyer was later allowed in to see his client but came out after 30 minutes and told reporters the hearing had been adjourned while judges waited for the prosecution team to arrive.

A spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office said Gibbons was charged under Article 125 of Sudan's constitution, the law relating to insulting religion and inciting hatred. Under that law, the offense is punishable with 40 lashes, a jail term of up to a year or a fine.Video Hear about the charges against Gibbons »

"We understand no offense was intended and trust the court decision will reflect that," the spokeswoman said.

On the first floor of the courthouse, around 25 police linked arms and forced journalists and British officials away from the court entrance. Police detained some journalists, and confiscated a camera belonging to a freelance CNN cameraman.

Four vans filled with riot police were waiting outside the courthouse, but there were no signs of street disturbances or protests. Staff from Gibbons' school, including Boulos, were present. They refused to comment on their colleague's predicament.

The charges against Gibbons were announced Wednesday in Arabic on by state-run news agency.

Although there is no ban in the Quran on images of Allah or the Prophet Mohammed, likenesses are considered highly offensive by Muslims.

Gibbons has been working at the school -- popular with wealthy Sudanese and expatriates -- since August, after leaving her position as deputy head teacher at a primary school in Liverpool this summer, said Boulos.

He said Gibbons asked the children to pick their favorite name for the new class mascot, which she was using to aid lessons about animals and their habitats.

Myspace death

http://www.boston.com/partners/worldnow/necn.html?catID=80769&clipid=1941875&autoStart=true&mute=false&continuous=true

I know that we were talking about the girl who killed herself over a myspace hoax last week in class. I wanted to post the link for the article in case anyone wanted to see it. When thinking about the case do you think that anyone is at actual blame for the death. Maybe the mother of the child who made the fake myspace or the Megans mother?

Back to the Myspace Death

When we were reading that article in class about the girl who had killed herself over messages she received on myspace, it brought up that maybe it is societys fault. I disagree completely. Okay, yes society portrays women as thin and beautiful, and yes the girl may have been a little chubby and had braces, but she was overcoming that. Those messages on myspace are what got to her, not some super skinny model in a vogue magazine.

DO white people think they're better?

I was thinking about the scene in Blackboard jungle when that guy(can't remember his name but he's the starrah) errupts at Sydney POitier's character saying something about him being black or nigger orw/e. Then I began to wonder. Black people have it embedded in them to have a soft spot for slavery or some concern that leads them to think ' MY PEOPLE have been hurt, MY PEOPLE have been ..." the same for Jews and the Holocost The same for child soldiers of wars in Africa. The same for prostitues and pimps. The same for underaged children exploited in child pornography rings etc What about white people? They've been through things too. For years they enslaved blacks, pushed Indians out of their homes. (of course that's not all they did and it all wasn't negative but stay with me here!)Is it possible that they too might have a MY PEOPLE embedded in them? MY PEOPLE are superior, others are inferior? Sure, you look now and you have white friends and white teachers but is it possible for that person you trust to consider you inferior because of skin?

Not trying to rub anybody the wrong way but brain just won't stop turning.
If this seems offensive tell me n i'll remove it

Interview of Trinia on Power 105

i was listening to an interview of Trinia on the Ed Lover show on Power 105 earlier this month and Ed had asked question that caught my attention. This not in their exact wording but it was basicly what they said.

Ed -> How do feel about the way that woman are currently being portrayed in the music industry today and is it fair to blame the artists?
Trinia -> No its not fair to blame the artisits because they do not force anyone do anything, you dont have do anything that you dont want to. if anything its those girls and the directors because the directors decide how they want the video done its their job.....

I tried getting a snippet of the interview but was unable im still trying though.

Illegal Immigrant takes cousin's identity to become a cop...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071123/ap_on_re_us/officer_s_secret_4

The above the article is about an illegal immigrant stealing his cousins identity just to become a cop. After reading the article do you agree with the government's action to jail him and permanently deport him?

Personally I think the government was right to do what they did. Falsifying that you are a US Citizen and stealing someone's identity (even with permission) are serious crimes that must be punished no matter how many good deeds have been done. If he wanted it so bad he should have went through the system like the law says you have to. Also if his father was alive when it was uncovered he would be jailed and deported as well.

What are your thoughts?

Cruise Ship Sinks, but Passengers Safe

By BILL CORMIER,

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Nov. 23) - A Canadian cruise ship struck submerged ice off Antarctica and began sinking, but all 154 passengers and crew, Americans and Britons among them, took to lifeboats Friday and were plucked to safety by a passing cruise ship.
No injuries were reported although passengers reportedly endured subfreezing temperatures for several hours as they waited in bobbing lifeboats for a Norwegian liner that took them to a Chilean military base in the region. The vessel sank early Friday evening, several hours after the predawn accident near Antarctica's South Shetland Islands. Before it sank, Susan Hayes of G.A.P. Adventures of Toronto, which owns the stricken MS Explorer, said, "The ship ran into some ice. It was submerged ice and the result was a hole about the size of a fist in the side of the hull so it began taking on water ... but quite slowly/""The passengers are absolutely fine," she said. "They're all accounted for, no injuries whatsoever."Hours after the pre-dawn accident near Antarctica's South Shetland Islands, Chilean aerial photographs showed the ship listing heavily, its white superstructure and red hull starkly visible against the gray, choppy waters and overcast skies.Hayes said 91 passengers had been aboard, including at least 23 Britons, 17 Dutch, 13 Americans and 10 Canadians. The ship also carried nine expedition staff members and a crew of 54.The group calmly abandoned ship when the captain's order came and pumps helped keep the ship stable for an orderly evacuation, Hayes said.Arnvid Hansen, captain of the Norwegian liner Nordnorge, said his ship ferried the passengers and crew to a Chilean air force base on King George Island in Antarctic waters near southernmost South America."The rescue operation ran very smoothly," the 54-year-old captain told The Associated Press by shipboard telephone from the Nordnorge.G.A.P Adventures is a tour company that provides excursions with an environmental focus. The Explorer was on a 19-day circuit of Antarctica and the Falkland Islands letting passengers observe penguins, whales and other wildlife while getting briefings from experts on the region.Traveling to Antarctica is always risky, Hayes said."There is ice in the area. Obviously it's a hazard of the area. But it's highly unusual (that the ship would hit the ice). This has never happened to us," he said.An Argentine rescue and command center received the first distress call at 12:30 a.m. EST Friday from the Explorer amid reports it was taking on water despite efforts to use onboard pumps, said Capt. Juan Pablo Panichini, an Argentine navy spokesman.A navy statement said that the captain ordered passengers to abandon ship about 90 minutes after the first call and that passengers and crew boarded eight semi-rigid lifeboats and four life rafts, with the captain leaving the ship later.A Chilean ornithologist identified as Paola Palavecino was quoted in an Argentine media report as saying she and others aboard went into the lifeboats before dawn and endured subfreezing temperatures for a few hours until they were picked up about 6 a.m. EST."The ship took on water quickly," she was quoted by the Argentine news agency Diarios y Noticias as telling a local radio station in a call from the Nordnorge.A commander at Chile's air base on King George island confirmed late Friday that the Nordnorge had arrived in a bay near the base, but said waves and strong winds had prevented the passengers from immediately disembarking. He said Chilean air force planes, weather permitting, would fly the survivors on Saturday to Punta Arenas at the southernmost tip of Chile. An Argentine navy statement said the Explorer was about 475 nautical miles southeast of Ushuaia, the southernmost Argentine city and a jumping-off point for cruise ships and supply vessels for Antarctica. Seas were calm and winds light at the time of the accident, officials said.Last Feb. 1, the Nordnorge evacuated 294 passengers, including 119 Americans from a sister Norwegian cruise ship, the MS Nordkapp, which ran aground off a remote Antarctic island. The Nordkapp later pulled off the rocks under its own power and authorities said those passengers were never in danger.

Cyclone Death Toll Tops 3,100

By PAVEL RAHMAN,AP
Posted: 2007-11-19 14:10:00 BARGUNA, Bangladesh (Nov. 19) - Azahar Ali huddled with his family, reading from the Quran, as the cyclone roared in. First the power went out, then screaming winds blew out the windows and ripped off the roof. The sea rushed in, washing him and his family away. The 80-year-old awoke in a rice paddy to find his son, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren and three other relatives dead, among the more than 3,100 people killed by Cyclone Sidr. "I have lost everything," he said Monday while recounting the terror of the worst cyclone in more than a decade to hit this low-lying South Asian nation of 150 million people.Details of the devastation and the stories of the survivors began to emerge as rescuers reached areas cut off four days earlier when the storm washed out roads and downed telephone lines. At least 3,113 people were known dead and more than 1,000 were missing, said Lt. Col. Main Ullah Chowdhury, an army spokesman. The Red Crescent Society, the Islamic cousin of the Red Cross, warned the death toll could rise to 10,000 once rescuers reach outlying islands. In the village of Parulkhel, residents and rescuers used bamboo poles to probe flooded fields, looking for submerged bodies. When a woman's corpse was discovered, workers rushed in with sacks and plastic sheet to lift the body out. Onlookers gathered, and one weeping man identified her as his mother."Some were identified and taken away by relatives. We buried dozens of others near where we found them," said Ali Akbar, a volunteer. Survivors picked through the village's wreckage, looking for anything salvageable in a jumble of splintered wood, bamboo and corrugated iron houses, fallen trees and bloated animal carcasses. A stench filled the air.In the neighboring village of Bainsamarta, Sheikh Mubarak, 40, sat among the ruins of his hut weeping for his 12-year-old daughter."As our house was washed away by walls of water, I grabbed my daughter and ran for shelter. The monster waves swept her away from me," he said. "Allah should have taken me instead."Survivors said many of the deaths could have been prevented but people failed to heed warnings to move to higher ground as the storm approached Thursday."'Nothing is going to happen' — that was our first thought, and we went to bed," said Dhalan Mridha, a 45-year-old farm worker from the village of Galachipa."Just before midnight the winds came like hundreds of demons. Our small hut was swept away like a piece of paper, and we all ran for shelter," he said.On the way, Mridha was separated from his wife, mother and two children. He found their bodies the next morning, stuck in a battered bush.Government and relief agencies stepped up efforts to get help to devastated areas.Army helicopters flew in high-protein cookies supplied by the World Food Program, said Emamul Haque, a spokesman for the U.N. agency's office in the capital, Dhaka.International groups promised initial aid totaling $25 million during a meeting with Bangladesh agencies Monday, Haque said.Tents, water, rice and other relief items have been slow to reach many.In the town of Barguna, long lines of anxious people formed at the market, hoping for word that help was on the way. "We have been waiting here for several hours, but no relief," said Uthan Ching, who left clutching an empty plastic bag.Government officials defended relief efforts and expressed confidence that authorities were up to the task."We have enough food and water," said Shahidul Islam, the top official in Bagerhat, a battered district near Barguna. "We are going to overcome the problem."U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that several million dollars were available from the United Nations' emergency response funds, depending on the need. Many foreign governments and international groups also pledged to help. The United States offered $2.1 million and two U.S. Marine Corps transport planes arrived in Dhaka with medical supplies, said Chowdhury, the army spokesman. An American military medical team was already in Bangladesh and two U.S. Navy ships, each carrying at least 20 helicopters and tons of supplies, would be made available if the Bangladesh government requested them, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in a statement. The European Union promised $2.2 million and the British government $5.1 million. Italy's Roman Catholic bishops conference said it would donate $2.9 million. The governments of Germany and France each pledged $730,000, Japan sent $318,000 in relief supplies, and the Philippines said it would provide a medical team.Bangladesh is a densely populated nation sitting on a vast river delta. Storms batter its low-lying lands every year, often killing large numbers of people. The most deadly recent storm was a tornado that leveled 80 villages in northern Bangladesh in 1996, killing 621 people.

The eFFeCTS oF mONey

http://blackvoices.aol.com/blogs/2007/11/15/dr-donda-west-update-on-tragic-death/

As you read this article u will see that her death could have been avoided because she knew of the else risk. Not saying that the lady deserves this but why is 50 something year old women getting plastic surgery. I think that people focus on their image way to much. Do think that her son being famous and the effects and pressure of the media is the reason she went through with this knowing the risk?

Yet again I am not happy

I was on the J line with my two little brothers, I ask Jonathan (age of 8) what he would like to be and he said that a cop or maybe a fireman then I ask Junior (age of 6) what he would like to be and he said a 'gangster' (did I spell the right?) Just like the people on tv. Why would a 6 year old be affected by tv? What is 'gangster' anyway? Any help?

A Similar comparison

When looking at the movie BlackBoard Jungle and Akeelah and the Bee, you see the same stereotypes, inner city youths never value education and all they want in life is trouble. Do you think that writers for these films develop these scripts from previous movies based on the same stereotypes or have they actually sat in a classroom and analyzed what went on?

What NYU students would give up

On the news the other day, a poll was taking to see what NYU students would give up for money. Most of them would actually give up their right to vote. About half would give up their right to vote for a year for full financial aid, and the other half would give up their right to vote forever for 1 million dollars. Is college really that expensive where students would give up a right so powerful for a full tuition?

In Response To my favorite Show

I just feel the need to get this off my chest. Dwayne "Dog" Chapman, also known as Hawaii's Dog the Bounty Hunter is television's coolest bounty hunter. In response to his PRIVATE phone call in the SECRECY of HIS OWN HOME, I absolutely don't think Dog is a racist. If all Latino's and Asians as well as Caucasians who uses the word in refrence to a black person in or around a conversation heavily populated with black people, then they would all be racist. I espcially think Dog's son wanted money that selling to the press just seemed ideal. For six thousand dollars he basically just shot his dads reputation and I 100 percent believe its unfair to Dog and the rest of his team. Lets talk about people like FAT JOE calling other rappers Niggas in his lyrics or People like Don Imus who has money and can buy back bits of his reputation!! What do we say to these people who ideally thinks it's okay because they are quickly overidden??

The bounty hunter in trouble

While listening to hot 97 they were talking about how Dog the bounty hunter called his son's girlfriend a nigga. His son didn't like it so he told.now he's in trouble. Do you think he said this in an act of racism?

Hip-Hop

If Hip-Hop is really dead than what is Hip-Hop and does it still exsist and does it have the same meaning?

Biil Cosby on CNN

While watching CNN one night Bill Cosby was talking about how parents aren't raising there kids with the love that they are suposse to. He also said that today it's all about gangs wanting to be a gangster or to impress an individual or a group of people. Which goes back to parents and how they raise and love there children.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS?

Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs(banned)

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY thing wrong with this.

The blackface caracitutres.
The mammy figure
The baby who doesn't speak well
The pretty dumb girl who can only wash, cook and clean.
The Murder company who murders anyone for $1.00, Midgets for half price and "Japs" for free.
Everybody ryhmes and always talks to a rythm.
The hot guy (Prince Chawmin) has gold teeth and two dice for front teeth.
The Dwarfs are in the military.
And at the end the sexual implication about black men....in a cartoon!!!

See for yourself, have I missed any?

The Censored Eleven

Ever heard of the Censored Eleven? In 1968 United Artists witheld a group of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons from syndadicataion because of their racist nature. The toons make use of blackface(exaggerated likenesses of black people thaat in my opinion look like dogs) caricture and ridicule the religious practices of black people. In "Sunday go to Meetin Time" several characters that stereotype and mock the black community are seen for example, a woman stealing a bra to use as a bonnet for her twins, a mammi shining her two pickanniny children's heads etc. There are several other cartoons that were removed from circulation but have not been added to list. They include cartoons about the Japanese during the world war two era and Native Amercians with targets painted on their backs.

Some of this type of animation is released for public veiwing through editing of certain words and acts that point directly to racism but innuendos remain and those that are 'clean' may be viewed on television by anyone.

With these cartoons removed from circulationn, it seems that there are no problems. This is not so. The companies that originally own these cartoons kept the leash on them tight but after many years of passing over hands and eventually landing in the hands of Turner Broadcasting, the grip weakened and many of these films can be bought on hhome video and seen on tv or video searchies. Some have been named the greatest cartoons of all time. With a label like that, how can you keep it from the people? Do you beleive that at the time these cartoons were drawn they were meant to be seen as such? Do you think that those of us who watch these now have the same thoughts about how discriminatory these films are?

The cartoons in the Censored Eleven are:
Hittin' the Trail for Hallelujah Land (1931, directed by Rudolph Ising)
Sunday Go to Meetin' Time (1936, directed by Friz Freleng)
Clean Pastures (1937, directed by Freleng)
Uncle Tom's Bungalow (1937, directed by Tex Avery)
Jungle Jitters (1938, directed by Freleng)
The Isle of Pingo Pongo (1938, directed by Avery)
All This and Rabbit Stew (1941, directed by Avery)
Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs (1943, directed by Robert Clampett)
Tin Pan Alley Cats (1943, directed by Clampett)
Angel Puss (1944, directed by Chuck Jones)
Goldilocks and the Jivin' Bears (1944, directed by Freleng)

Info. from Wikipedia.
Try a google video search. see for yourself. Are they racist? Should they be even be releases on private home videos? Was Turner Broadcasting wrong for releasing these videos to tv?

8 Killed in Finland School Shooting

Interesting in light of our conversations about the power of youtube...

TUUSULA, Finland - An 18-year-old student opened fire in a Finnish high school Wednesday, killing seven students and the principal before turning the gun on himself, police said.

The teenager, who was not identified, shot himself in the head but survived and was taken to a hospital in “extremely critical condition,” police spokesman Tero Haapala said.

The attack at Jokela High School in Tuusula, some 30 miles north of the capital, Helsinki, shocked the Nordic nation, where gun ownership is fairly common by European standards but deadly shootings are rare.
Story continues below ↓advertisement

Finnish media reported that in 1989 a 14-year-old boy shot and killed two students, apparently for teasing him.

Police said at a news conference after the attack that the gunman in Wednesday’s attack shot the victims — five boys, two girls and the female principal — with a .22-caliber pistol. About a dozen other people were injured as they tried to escape the school, police said.

Licensed last month
“He was from an ordinary family,” police chief Matti Tohkanen said about the gunman, who belonged to a gun club and got a license for the pistol Oct. 19. He did not have a previous criminal record, he said.

Finnish media said the shooter revealed his plans in a YouTube posting before the attack. The video, titled “Jokela High School Massacre,” showed a picture of a building by a lake that appeared to be the high school, along with two photos of a young man holding a handgun. The person who posted the video was identified in the user profile as an 18-year-old man from Finland.

The posting was later removed. The video was apparently later removed from the site, but appears on another site, called LiveLeak.com.

The profile contained a text calling for a “revolution against the system.”

Police said they would investigate any possible connection the gunman might have had to the video.

Terhi Vayrynen, 17, a student at the school told The Associated Press that her brother Henri Vayrynen, 13, and his classmates had witnessed the shooting of the principal outside the school through the classroom window.

Shouted 'Revolution!'
She said the gunman then came into Henri Vayrynen’s class shouting: “Revolution! Smash everything!”

When no one did anything, he shot the TV and the windows of the class room but did not fire at the students. The he ran out and down the corridor, Terhi Vayrynen said.

Kim Kiuru, a teacher at the school, said the principal announced over the public address system just before noon that all students should remain in their classrooms.

“After that I saw the gunman running with what appeared to be a small-caliber handgun in his hand through the doors toward me after which I escaped to the corridor downstairs and ran in the opposite direction,” Kiuru told reporters.

Kiuru said he saw a woman’s body as he fled the building.

“Then my pupils shouted at me out of the windows to ask what they should do and I told them to jump out of the windows ... and all my pupils were saved,” Kiuru said.

More than 400 students, from 12 to 18, were enrolled at Jokela, officials said.

Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen described the situation as “extremely tragic,” and declared Thursday a day of national mourning with flags to be flown half-staff.

Reality Out Of Conrol

Ok! Reality TV is simply out of conrol. Shows like "Flavor of Love", "Rock of Love", "I Love New York" and "Girl Meets Cowboy"(all about people finding love in 12 weeks!) makes society loose the sense of what reality really is. Is reality even real anymore? Or is it all scripted?

Is He Wrong?

Last week, Dwayne "Dog" Chapman from the reality TV show Dog the Bounty Hunter had a very disturbing conversation with one of his sons that leaked to the press. One of his sons is dating a black women, and Dwyane seems to find that unacceptable. He said to his son "Now if you continue to date her, your going to have to find another job, i'll help you find you, you just cant stay here. We say the word "nigger" a lot in this house, and i dont want no black women getting offended and trying to ruin my career and all that i have. Now i dont mean "nigger" in a bad way, i just mean it in a normal way". Ever since this leaked out, he has been aplogizing every chance he gets, but is he really wrong? People make racist comments all the time that does not get leaked out to the press. So is he wrong for having this conversation in the comfort of his own home?

Corner Store gone Bad

Today I was on my way home and then I stop at the croner store which has benn thatir for 6 years, I look up and at both corners of their sign its written in big bold letters "We sell Beer, Newports, and Condom for all use." I was in shock because I have been coming to this store for 4 years to buy candy. How does this affect the children who know how to read at the age of 7 or 10?

Analyze This

After reading Six Degrees I've began to analyze the things I do and say which make me appear to be someone I'm not. Very often people do and say things which completely disagree's with their inner character. What if Britney's wild and erratic behavior is just away to hide the love and support she is longing for? Why do people choose to fit the "status quo" instead of being their own? Does the media really encourage you to become someone you are opposite of?

Train

Well I was in the train on my way to school, and I see five asian boys doing math homework and then I look across from the asian boys just to see two young African American girls reading some books. The media does have a strong effect on some but not all.

SIX DEGREES

How would we know when we have a match of Six people? Would we have to go out and aggresively look for them or would they just show themselves in a "small world" situation?

The Boondocks

I am a big fan of the Boondocks and how they tackle and show different backgrounds on tv. In this show they accurately try to express what alot of black peoples stereotypes on certain issues. The only thing i noticed was that they use the "N" word alot. Why do you think they use the "N" word alot?Is it to make us laugh? I kow that I laugh sometimes.

Will this ever end

http://cbs4.com/video/?id=42598@wfor.dayport.com

Still today even though there have been cases with priest having unwanted advances with children in church it is still evident that this is still happening. As shown in the above web link, this is still happening in churches and it even seems that church officials are letting priest get away with this crime and they are allowing them to continue preaching. What will it take before this crime is taken seriously and teens are more protected?

Media vs. Teens

I was browsing the internet, looking for articles related to teens in media and I came across a very interesting article. This article dates back to the Columbine shootings, but it's relevance still holds true. Why is it that now, so many years later, the media is still following the same twisted protocol? Will this always be the way teens are portrayed in the media?
Please follow the link and read the article. It's seriously interesting.

HiP hOP VS. AmeRICa

Constantly they argue over the aspects of hip hop. How do you think that this will ever get anywhere or ever solve this controversial discussion???

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

I cound't find the commercial that they give on MTV about the sigarret company, when its compared to gund they are just as deadly when rated light and ultra light. They are still highly addicted and could still cause death by cancer. So why do people keep using it? Becuase its used in the media and because artis and rappers use it?

What the want people to think about us

Lately i have noticed that television makes it seem as though African American and Latino ethnic groups are the only groups who's teenage age girls have babies at a young age as though we do nothing but stand on street corners and push baby carriages. Television also makes it seem as though whites do everything right and don't make mistakes or even have babies young. My question is.....Why do you think do you think television wants to portray us to be this way?

Celebrities And How Their Crimes Are Important

I noticed lately that some celebrities have been running into the law for various reasons. Foxy Brown has been a frequent celeb that has appeared too much times on the news and in the daily news. How is Foxy Brown assualting a nail sylist with her blackberry going to keep me imformed about the bigger issues in the media. I watch the news alot and having the media class and classes with Mr. Scialo I see various topics and try to figure out why and for what are they showing it. My question is Why do you think these unimportant issues are being stressed to the viewers? Is it because were eating this publicity or is it really a must to know?

Victim v. Criminal

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/ny-nyshot215426238oct21,0,2043252.story

In the article above discusses numerous shootings, including those of four teenagers...
Throughout the city, teenagers are always included in reports of "gang related" shootings. What about those in the suburbs? Why is it that those are rarely ever linked to gangs? Could we say that every young teend in the city is involved with a gang? I don't think so. Do you think the news is portraying our young victims as criminals for a reason? Or is every incident involving teens, that makes it to the news, is really linked to gang activity? I have some doubts...

Teens and Their Teachers

http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-us&tab=m138&vid=cddbe8ac-eb0c-43ac-9cfb-c4458c29ec20&playlist=videoByTag:mk:us:sd:1:sf:Title:ns:VC_Supplier:tag:Msnbc:vs:0&gt1=10450

In the above web post their is an interesting article about teens and high school students. It seems that high school teachers getting involved with their students is becoming more common and that most cases are "never reported". In some cases that are reported the teacher doesn't even get punished. It may be thought that it mostly happens with male students and female teachers but it was found that 90% of these cases involve male teachers and female students. Not only is this a growing problem but if the teacher is fired or quits the school district they could always go to another school district where they could do something like that again. There is no system that documents these problems. These teachers are even sent to elementary schools in the hope that they don't do it again. It was even said that principles should get more training to see these actiions in their co-workers but its not like you can just tell what the person does just by the way they behave. What do you think about this issue, and whats the best way for it to be solved?

What is it???

What defines your idendity, is it your appearance to other or the action that you take? Can they be the things that go unnoticed or a mixture of all three?

Rehabs IDENTITY!!!

Seems like La Lohan is out of REHAB...Dun Dun Dun, who is she now. Has she found Christ, going to help the soldiers in Iraq or building a school for famished 3rd world children. Can we really predict what two more Teen Vogue parties can do for the Lohanater???

It has No Effect on Me

When asked, most kids claim the media has no efect in shaping them. Do you beleive that you can be raised as an inner city student unifluenced by the media? Is such a thing possible? You may see it and choose to ignore it but doesn't the media effect who you are? Even if it's just you siding with Coca Colar over Sprite or vice versa b/c you don't like one commercial. Doesn't media have to have some effect on who you become?

Diabetic Teens Skipping Insulin to Lose Weight

Diabulimia is usually practiced by teenage girls and young women, and it may be growing more common as the secret is exchanged on Internet bulletin boards for diabetics and those with eating disorders. One expert who has studied the phenomenon estimates that 450,000 Type 1 diabetic women in the United States — one-third of the total — have skipped or shortchanged their insulin to lose weight and are risking a coma and an early death.
"People who do this behavior wind up with severe diabetic complications much earlier," said Ann Goebel-Fabbri, a clinical psychologist at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.
The American Diabetes Association has long known about insulin omission as a way to lose weight. But "diabulimia" is a term that has only cropped up in recent years and is not a recognized medical condition, said Barbara Anderson, a pediatrics professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Type 1 diabetes is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with this disease produce little or no insulin, so they take shots of the hormone daily.
It differs from Type 2, the form associated with obesity and which accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes.
Insulin is vital for delivering glucose from the bloodstream to the body's cells. Without insulin, cells starve even while the bloodstream becomes burdened with too much glucose.
When Type 1 diabetics skip or reduce their insulin, they risk falling into a coma or even dying. Blindness, amputations and kidney failure are some of the possible long-term complications.
Warning signs for diabulimia include a change in eating habits — typically someone who eats more but still loses weight — low energy and high blood-sugar levels, Goebel-Fabbri said. Frequent urination is another signal. When sugars are high, the kidneys work overtime to filter the excess glucose from the blood.
This purging of sugar from the body through the kidneys is similar to someone with bulimia, who binges and then purges, or vomits, Anderson said.
Studies show that women with Type 1 diabetes are twice as likely to develop an eating disorder. Ironically, good diabetes management, which requires a preoccupation with food, counting carbohydrates and following a diet, may lead some to form an unhealthy association with food, Goebel-Fabbri said.
Jacq Allan, 26, is a diabulimic. She said she had not taken her insulin shots for two weeks and rarely takes them regularly. She weighs 42 pounds (19 kilograms) less than she did a year ago.
Allan is stuck between two fears: taking insulin, which may lead to weight gain, and the damage her destructive compulsion is doing to her body.
"I'm terrified of insulin," Allan said. "Every morning I wake up and think maybe I should go to the hospital."
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes nearly three years ago, Allan said she can feel the constant, sky-high sugar in her blood. Her list of ailments — chest pain, heart palpitations, muscle cramps, bacterial infections and lower back pain — are not the usual health problems of a twenty-something.
"I'm constantly worried that my eyes are going to go, but they seem relatively OK for the moment," she said. "I always wonder if this will be the day that some major organ fails. I kind of want something to happen because then maybe I'll stop."

Human mind and entertainment, How does music affect our level of understanding, confedence and so on?

To my opinion it has most affect on our level of confedence, according to music videos if a chick has a nice butt she is perfect for ALL guys (according to videos) so if a girl does not have a nice butt or a nice body she will never find anything. Now how does this affect kids? Well I don't know how about a look at our old cartoons now having guns in the internet.

Endangered: The American Reader

According to an article on CNN money.com entitled Endangered: The American Reader, 47% of adults currently read fiction. This figure ten years ago was 79%. What does this say about our society today? If our adults can't even read for pleasure, are the children doing it?

Intolerance Displayed Today

What to u saw when you see people of the Jewish religion entering a NYC public bus. Most people may saw they wouldn't have a problem with that. Then why is it that i witnessed African American Jr. High School students approach a Jewish family on the bus and proceed to ask them why they were there and if their bus wasn't working today. I understand that non-Jewish people are not allowed on the buses owned by the Jewish people but is this still a way for us to b acting? I certainly don't think so. After all the fighting for equality i was shocked to see what was going on before my very eyes. Is this how all African American students want to be portrayed?

Eating Disorders - Therapy for Anorexia and Bulimia

Mike Hussey of the American Chronicle
September 28, 2007
Many of those suffering from anorexia and bulimia are high-functioning adults coping with stress, anxiety, and depression. They may have tried many different solutions to their problem. This article explores the typical experiences of a few people suffering from such eating disorders. Most therapists today deal with these disorders by first treating the underlying causes of the body-image problems. These causes are assumed to be past experiences and how they may have affected us.
Women and men who suffer from these illnesses may have to overcome deeper issues ranging from poor self-esteem to childhood abuse. Effective therapy can help improve their professional and family lives as well.
Therapy for anorexia and bulimia
Anorexia, bulimia, and eating disorders are a way of coping when stress and anxiety seem unbearable.
With the encouragement of a therapist, an anorexic or bulimic client can learn to face the sources of her stress or anxiety, and find healthier means of reacting to stressful situations.
One woman who had overcome eating disorders several years earlier consulted a psychotherapist in Austin when her problems recurred. This woman had recently moved into Austin, and she was without the support of family and friends while working at a new job. She had reverted to her old methods of coping with stress, namely food. Food is a form of self-treatment for many people, as it was in this woman's case.
Her therapist helped her to see her need for developing new relationships, and she also participated in group therapy to meet people.
By the end of therapy, she made new friends and was excelling in her new job. Her eating disorder no longer affected her.
Eating disorders and treating depression
Depression can be another cause of eating disorders too. Of course, eating disorders can cause someone to be depressed, so determining cause from effect is difficult.
A depressed person may overeat, or not eat enough, and so either gain or lose a lot of weight. This will affect their physical health. A therapist will help her concentrate on her strengths and regain her sense of balance.
One woman in Houston was depressed because her husband had had an affair and left her. She blamed herself and her recent weight gain for this, but was not able to lose weight. She tried everything she could but the weight remained. Therapy helped her see several other contributors to her depression. She explored some of the events in her past that were causing her a great deal of distress.
She was able to take responsibility for her eating habits, and find a warm and supportive relationship.
Eating disorders, PTSD and victims of sexual abuse
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder may happen because of one-time traumas likes being the victim of an accident or a crime, and also because of long-term abuse like childhood sexual or physical abuse.
PTSD often goes hand in hand with eating disorders.
Victims of childhood abuse sometimes keep the abuse secret, and the therapist may be the first person they confide in. Sometimes when childhood abuse has been blocked out, a reaction may be triggered in adult life by seemingly unrelated events. And lots of times, bulemia or overeating is a symptom. One therapist in Denver helped her client work her way through traumatic memories by giving her art and journaling exercises. These gave the victim a sense of perspective and she was able to stop blaming herself. She also became better connected with others emotionally. Her eating disorder markedly improved.
Eating disorders and counseling for couples
Eating disorders may affect someone who is married or in a committed relationship.
Counseling can benefit married, engaged, or lesbian and gay couples, if one has an eating disorder. The partner with the eating disorder may feel guilty for what he thinks he is causing his partner to feel. And the partner may feel guilty for feelings of resentment towards the partner with the disorder.
That is why couples therapy helps so much.
The most common problems that bring partners into therapy are poor communication, or upheavals like illness, death of a family member, or an affair. Any of these can plunge partners into depression and conflict and often make the eating disorder worse.

Fights Off Of School Grounds

Fights off of school grounds

In middle and high schools across the country teachers and school officials are struggling with ways to help their students. They are responsible for educating their students, but also for keeping them out of trouble. The number of physical and verbal fights that occur in schools are on the rise and many school officials are trying to get a hold on the growing problem.
In many larger cities it is likely that at least one physical or verbal fight will break out daily in a school or on school property. There are a number of reasons why a fight may breakout at a school. These reasons may include, but are not limited to, a sports team, friends, grades, relationships, or drugs.
Although a verbal fight is not as damaging as a physical fight it can still cause an unlimited amount of damage to a teenager or young adult. There are many instances where verbal fights are not even being considered fights. This is due to that fact that no one is being physically injured and they are now happening so much that they sometimes go unnoticed.
A few years back a typical school fight would involve fists, punching, and maybe some hair pulling. Unfortunately now many violent students have a large number of dangerous weapons all within their reach. It is not uncommon to hear of a school fight that involves a knife or a gun.
School officials in areas throughout the country are faced with the difficult task of trying to prevent fights from breaking out on their grounds. Large populated schools are often equipped with security guards and metal detectors. Although this protection may not completely eliminate school fights there are many school officials that are noticing a decrease in dangerous school fights where extra security guards and metal detectors are in place.
Smaller school with a smaller budget may be unable to fully staff their school with potentially expensive security measures. For this reason many smaller schools rely on their teachers and students to be aware of their surroundings. Many students are encouraged to inform an adult if they learn of an impending argument or fight.
In a world that is filled with peer pressure many students may be afraid to alert school officials or adults to a potential fight. For this reason many schools are effectively developing anonymous ways for students or other community members to report any existing or potential acts of violence.
Another way that schools are trying to control the number of fights that occur during school hours or on their property is by punishing students why many be involved or have previously participated in a verbal or physical fight. Many students are now being expelled or suspended from school. A lighter punishment may involve after-school or lunchtime detention.
Many parents and school officials are aware that if a teenager wishes to harm another individual or student they will likely try, whether it be on school grounds or not. School officials are in charge of keeping a large number of students safe and free from danger. Although most school officials would hate to see a fight occur off of school grounds their main responsibility is protecting students while they are in their care.

These violent games that people play mostly teenagers is one of the reasons that teenagers pick up these ruthless and violent ways. or maybe it's the parents who buy the games for them so who is the real blame for teenagers doin what they see and play?

Are you 4real???

Walking in lower Manhattan today there was a magazine cover that caught my eye. It was an In-Touch Magazine with front page headline screaming "Is She Pregnant, Angelina Gains 10lbs". Come on lets be serious with all the things that are going on in the world they decided to tell the country that Angelina Jolie has gained 10 f******n pounds. Are the publishers trying to tell me the Ms. Jolie gaining 10lbs is more important than a solider taking a bullet for this nation or that her weight gain is more important than the unfair justice that is being handed out in Jena?? To the right is copy of the cover.

Homophobia

Why is it that Rap and R&B bash Gays in their music? Do you think they are taking a stand by saying gays arent an orientation or is it just a hateful sign?

So...what are we going to do about it?

Some of you have expressed disdain at the way inner city students are portrayed on the news, in movies, and on TV shows whether that be due to violence, academics, relationships, drugs, etc. So...my question is....what are we going to do about it? You are the pilot group. What can we do to address the side that is silenced, unspoken, not addressed? How can we show the reality of students who are proactive and care about their education? Now's the time to brainstorm...

City love...

Ever notice how most movies about inner city students almost always have on character that's just moving from the suburbs into the city? In Save the Last Dance, Julia Stiles' character was moving from ther upper crust life in Jersey to the city. In Step Up a similar scenario. As the movie list continues there is the same plot and scenario. Young suburban kid moves into city,. awkward at first, meets one friend, develops into small group of freinds, falls for someone with a high status at school or who will draw attention them. But is this what really happens? Have you ever seen this couple walking through the hallways? I haven't..so why don't they show the inner city girl who falls in love with the city boy?
where is that at???

A whole Nude World

I dont really think that theres a real answer for why Inner City students a portrayed as young mischeavous children with absolutely no future and no morals. Instead of going on about why they show us fighting on T.V. etc... Follow the link below and listen carefully to the words of this "A whole new World" parody. I am not sure as to the creator but backtrack to the sexual appetite of our youth today and make note of how a timeless tragedy can be turned into such vulgar comedy.

Something I saw on the CW 1 news last night

I was watching the news last night when I heard a report about a certain advertisiment that caught the eyes of a lot of people in the area (I hope you all know whaT I'M TALKING ABOUT IF YOU SAW THE NEWS TOO). It was an ad showing a woman striking a very "out there" pose. The makers of the ad are people who use sexuality to market things but the name of the company wasn't given out. When people were asked what they thought about the ad, some women replied "it's a little too tacky" while a male replied "it's interesting". My question to you is that do you think using sexuality is going out of style or was it set up in the wrong area or wrong target audience?

What is the role of the news?

As we begin our discussions about how various news stations broadcast news or cover stories, I wonder what you think of as appropriate. Check out how Fox News berates Chris Crocker for his response to Britney Spears and her "comeback." Is this high-quality journalism when youtube clips are making national news?

Targeted Lyrics

Did you know that Young Joc and Coldplay are both under the same record label?
If you didn't at least you do now, but that's not the point. The point is that these two artists are produced and distributed by the same company and yet their lyrics are set out to be something completely different. In many of Youn Joc's songs he talks about degrading women and having money, but in Coldplay's songs the message is uplifting. Why? Joc is marketed to young African-Americans and Coldplay to young white teens, but why is that the message sent to us is a negative one and the other half gets one of hope? This ties back into actually listening to the music you enjoy.
Go listen to Joc's song "I know you see it", but read the lyrics.
And do the same for Coldplay's "Square One"
Then post thoughts.....it's really interesting.

Just thinking...

I was shocked and appalled at the candidate for Ms. South Carolina.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WALIARHHLII

Just to keep you informed of the numbers, this video has over 3.5 million views on UTube. It has generated more views in 3 days than all of the videos of any presidential candidate in months. Interesting that she has now received more press than even the winner of the pageant.

What does this aspect of the media tell you? Is beauty more important than brains? Thoughts please!!
